Things to Do

The area is perfect for outdoor activities especially walking, cycling, horse-riding, canoeing and fishing. Many places of historic and cultural interest are within easy access and the region is the heart of Cathar country. Ski resorts are only a short drive away
South-west of Quillan the River Aude and its tributaries have carved magnificent ravines and gorges in the landscape.
The road from Quillan to Axat passes through the deep gorges at Pierre-Lys, with cliffs either side of the road stretching to 700 metres in height.
Beyond Axat the route passes through the equally dramatic Gorges de Saint-Georges and Gorges de l'Aude.
All three offer a very good opportunity to enjoy the landscape, either from the comfort of your car or as a starting point for walking and cycling in the region.

Coast/Beach
The nearest beaches are on the Mediterranean coastal strip from Narbonne to the Spanish border, including the resorts of Argeles, Leucarte, Canet and Coullioure. The nearest is Port Barcares, the biggest Canet Plage, These are about one and a half to two hours drive through spectacular scenery of the Languedoc Roussillion wine growing region and Cathar country.
Nearby is the huge Lac de Montbel, near Chalabre about 45 minutes by car, which has facilities for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and pedaloes. Puivert also has a lake with a beach

Golf courses are both within an hour's drive at Foix and Carcassonne.

Skiing
Many ski resorts catering for all abilities can be found in little French villages of the dramatic Pyrenees mountains, within 40 minutes to one hour's drive away. These are far less busy with few lift queues and at very reasonable prices. The sunny winter climate also means that non-skiers can enjoy the cafe terraces. For the winter sports enthusiasts Aude hosts the ski resort of Camurac, This area has all the charm of a Cathar Country mountain village and boasts 16 downhill ski runs of all grades and 50km of ski touring tracks.

Swimming About a 40 minute drive away are the thermal spas of Alet le Bains and Rennes le Bains with outdoor swimming pools at a steady 30 degrees. There is river swimming in several spots up and down the river Sals, including one almost on our doorstep and another ten minutes walk away in a secluded spot. Locally, other water-sports include canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting and trout fishing . There's pony-treking on the local horses of the Camargue, a casino with piano bar, a dinosaur museum and a museum of hats, truly something for everyone!

Water Sports The water flowing down from the Pyrenees is regulated by the Matemale and Puyvalador dams and means that the river Aude provides ideal conditions for white water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, rafting, tubing and canyoning. It is 170 km in length with varying grades of water, from big white water for thrill seekers or quiet waters without any risk for family canoeing.

Rock Climbing Around Carcassonne and in the Haute Vallee you will find ideal natural cliffs for rock-climbing. There are rock faces to suit beginners or the more experienced and climbing is possible all year round. Picture below of Bugarach about 30 kms from Belvianes
