The
area is perfect for outdoor activities especially walking, cycling, horse-riding,
canoeing and fishing. Many places of historic and cultural interest are within
easy access and the region is the heart of Cathar country. Ski resorts are only
a short drive away
South-west of Quillan the River Aude and its tributaries
have carved magnificent ravines and gorges in the landscape.
The road from
Quillan to Axat passes through the deep gorges at Pierre-Lys, with cliffs either
side of the road stretching to 700 metres in height.
Beyond Axat the route
passes through the equally dramatic Gorges de Saint-Georges and Gorges de l'Aude.
All
three offer a very good opportunity to enjoy the landscape, either from the comfort
of your car or as a starting point for walking and cycling in the region. Coast/Beach
The
nearest beaches are on the Mediterranean coastal strip from Narbonne to the Spanish
border, including the resorts of Argeles, Leucarte, Canet and Coullioure. The
nearest is Port Barcares, the biggest Canet Plage, These are about one and a half
to two hours drive through spectacular scenery of the Languedoc Roussillion wine
growing region and Cathar country.
Nearby is the huge Lac de Montbel, near
Chalabre about 45 minutes by car, which has facilities for swimming, sailing,
windsurfing and pedaloes. Puivert also has a lake with a beach
